NOWRUZ PROJECT
This project was created based on the guidelines given by Steelcase for the Steelcase Student Competition. This is an office created for a client called NEXT. It was inspired by a beautiful village in Egypt called Al-Fayoum. Scroll down to learn more about this project.
BACKGROUND
This project is centered around designing for Afghan refugees who recently fled from war from the city of Kabal in Afghanistan. The idea is to build a sustainable shelter that is meant to feel like their permanent home. This house was created using a concrete material called cortex which hardens after 24 hours when putting water on it. It allows the shelter to be built more quickly and efficiently.
CONCEPT
The concept behind this project is inspired by the famous holiday in Afghanistan known as Nowruz which presents these 3 elements:
Growth
Community
Rebirth
This is meant to be a temporary shelter that feels more like a permanent home. I wanted it have a strong foundation that's tied to their culture and beliefs which is why I chose this concept. The goal is for them to feel hopeful and renewed when moving in and living in this home.
